At some point in the future I will add timer interrupts (similar to raster interrupts) with instructions to write to the DAC as well as to read/write the user port. That will allow better timing control, independent of the main thread. But that will be for OS V1.1 or something

Yes, but music is much more sensitive to timing. For speech, timing isn't nearly as critical. For music, we'd really need the interrupt mechanism Franck was talking about.

Yes, that was in response to Franck's post; a purely "software" player is impossible if you want  precise timing. I ran tests using rasters as a timer for a player, but it remains too imprecise... unless Franck provides us with a cycle table for the Lofi instructions
